Protecting America’s youngest workers

The Department of Labor is leading an interagency task force to combat child labor exploitation, and we in the department’s Wage and Hour Division are increasing enforcement and creating new resources to better inform employers, parents, young workers and educators about child labor laws.

2. Protecting workers from extreme heat

Workers in the field without clean and cool water to drink are at higher risk of dehydration, heat stress and heat illness. The Wage and Hour Division enforces field safety protections for farmworkers as they produce fruits and vegetables for our kitchen tables by ensuring they have clean, cool drinking water.

3. Ensuring workers have healthful working conditions

In addition to enforcing safety requirements in the fields, the division ensures agricultural workers have safe housing and transportation. And earlier this month, we launched our Power to Pump campaign to raise awareness of expanded protections for millions of additional nursing workers – including farmworkers, teachers, and workers in the retail, restaurant, transportation and care industries – to express breast milk at work.

4. Preventing workers with visas from paying illegal recruitment fees

Employers hiring temporary workers with visas, such as H-2A and H-2B visas, are prohibited from requiring workers to pay recruitment fees or costs associated with their employment in the U.S. We’re committed to enforcing these worker protections regardless of where the workers are from or which language they speak.

5. Putting hard-earned wages into workers’ pockets

When we find labor violations, we often recover unpaid wages for workers. However, some of those wages remain unclaimed because workers have changed jobs, moved to a new address or changed their name. That’s why we want to get the word out about our Workers Owed Wages program during Labor Rights Week – and throughout the year – to encourage workers to search our database for any wages they might be owed. We want all workers to receive every dollar they’ve earned.

Throughout Labor Rights Week, federal agencies and consulates will attend events across the country to educate workers, employers and local communities about workers’ rights. We encourage you to follow us on social media to find out about events in your area, share our messages and celebrate workers’ dignity. You can also contact a local outreach specialist to learn more about Labor Rights Week activities near you.
